Guatemala: A Nation on the Move

· news

The small Central American nation of Guatemala has been in the spotlight recently, as protests against the government’s handling of corruption and crime sweep the country. The protests, which began in September 2022, have drawn large crowds and sparked international attention, with many calling for greater accountability from the government.

Guatemala has long struggled with corruption, which has been a major obstacle to economic development and social progress. According to Transparency International, Guatemala ranks among the most corrupt countries in the world, with corruption perceptions scores of 33 out of 100 (Transparency International, 2022). The country’s president, Alejandro Giammattei, was even accused of involvement in a bribery scandal just months after taking office (BBC News, 2021).

The recent protests have centered on demands for greater transparency and accountability from the government. Protesters are calling for reforms to the country’s electoral system, as well as measures to tackle corruption and impunity (Al Jazeera, 2022). The protesters’ message has been echoed by international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS), which has expressed concern over the situation in Guatemala (OAS, 2022).

Despite the challenges facing Guatemala, there are also many reasons for optimism. The country has made significant strides in recent years to promote economic growth and social development. According to the World Bank, Guatemala’s economy has grown steadily over the past decade, with GDP per capita increasing from $2,600 in 2010 to $4,400 in 2020 (World Bank, 2022). Additionally, the country has made progress in reducing poverty and improving access to education and healthcare.

However, much work remains to be done. Corruption and crime continue to be major challenges for Guatemala, and the government must take concrete steps to address these issues if it is to fulfill its promise of a brighter future for all Guatemalans.
