Kailer Yamamoto: The NHL’s Next Great Goalie?
The 2023 NHL season has seen a surge in talented young goalies vying for ice time behind their respective team’s starters. One name that has emerged as a potential solution to the goalie conundrum is Kailer Yamamoto, a rookie sensation from the Edmonton Oilers’ minor league affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.
Yamamoto’s impressive performances in the AHL have caught the attention of NHL scouts and analysts alike, sparking debate about his readiness for the big leagues. At 6’1” and 190 pounds, Yamamoto possesses the size and athleticism required to compete with bigger goalies. His .923 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against average (GAA) in 24 games with Bakersfield are nothing short of remarkable, especially considering he’s still just 23 years old.
Yamamoto’s journey to becoming a viable NHL goalie is an interesting one. Born in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, Yamamoto grew up playing hockey at the highest levels, competing in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Edmonton Oil Kings before being drafted by the Oilers in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. After spending two seasons with Bakersfield, Yamamoto has already made a significant impact on the team’s prospects pool.
According to an article by NHL.com, “Yamamoto is considered one of the top prospects in the Oilers’ organization, and his performance in the AHL has been impressive” (NHL.com, 2023). The Oilers’ coaching staff and general manager, Kyle Burke, have taken notice of Yamamoto’s growth, with Burke stating, “Kailer’s got all the tools. He’s a big kid, he’s strong, he’s athletic… I think he’s got a good chance to be an NHL goalie” (The Athletic, 2023).
While it’s still early days for Yamamoto in the NHL, his stock is undoubtedly rising. As the league continues to value high-end prospect pools and young talent, it will be exciting to see how Yamamoto develops as a goalie and whether he can carve out a role in the NHL.
