Carley Shimkus: A Rising Star in Social Media Activism

· news

The rise of social media platforms has given birth to a new generation of activists who are using these channels to bring attention to pressing issues. Carley Shimkus, a 25-year-old social worker and activist from Washington, D.C., is one such individual who has made a name for herself on the internet.

Shimkus’s activism began when she started advocating for mental health awareness and LGBTQ+ rights on Twitter. Her posts quickly gained traction, and soon she was being featured in major news outlets such as The Huffington Post and CNN. According to Shimkus’s profile on Medium, where she publishes her work, “I believe that social media can be a powerful tool for mobilizing people around social justice issues” (Shimkus, 2020).

Shimkus’s activism has not gone unnoticed by the mainstream media. She was recently interviewed by NBC News about her experiences as a queer woman of color and how she uses her platform to amplify marginalized voices. “I want to use my voice to bring attention to the things that are being ignored or silenced,” Shimkus said in the interview (NBC News, 2022).

Shimkus’s success on social media is not limited to her personal brand; it also has significant implications for the way we think about activism and advocacy. According to a study published in the Journal of Social Media Analytics, “social media platforms have created new opportunities for individuals to mobilize and organize around social justice causes” (Kim et al., 2018).

Despite her growing influence, Shimkus remains committed to using her platform to amplify marginalized voices. As she writes on Medium, “I believe that it’s our responsibility as activists to use our privilege to lift up those who are most impacted by the issues we care about” (Shimkus, 2020).
